Chapter 12

A COACH was already waiting when Sebastian rose the following morning. As well as the four men sitting on the roof for protection, there were provisions loaded that would last much longer than the journey to Kent and bundles of clothes that held more than Bronwyn arrived with.

She sniffed as Sebastian helped her aboard and wiped away a tear before it had the chance to roll down her face. “Will I see you again?”

“Of course. I will visit as soon as I can—I have yet to see that nephew of mine.”

“It might be too dangerous.”

“I don’t care.” He hugged her and pressed a purse of money into her hand. She tried to give it back. “It’s not much, but use it to write to me.”

She nodded, too distressed to speak.

Samuel put his hand on Sebastian’s shoulder. “It is time to go.”

Sebastian stepped away and closed the coach’s door. “Take care, Bronwyn.”

“You must let me know what happens.”

“I will.”

The horses whinnied at the crack of the driver’s whip, and the coach began its journey to Kent.

“Thank you again for last night, Samuel. But I think it is time I returned to Crofton Hall.”

A groom brought out his horse from the stable block.

“Do you need someone to accompany you?” asked Samuel.

“No. If I leave now, I’ll be back by midafternoon—I’ll be riding faster without Bronwyn in tow.” Sebastian mounted the horse and noticed a small sack of food tied to the saddle. “Thank you for that.”

“Travel safely, Sebastian. And if you’re ever passing this way, you will always be welcome.”

Samuel gave him directions to the main road that avoided having to pass through the town, and he was soon cantering away from St. Albans on his way back to Crofton Hall.

Sebastian stopped only to rest the horse and empty his bladder, but slowed down to eat. The journey back flew by faster than the one there, and he made excellent time and arrived at the hall roughly when he was expected. Most, if not all, of the guests must have departed, as only Anthony’s horses were in the stables.

Once back inside, Sebastian tracked Anthony down to his study. Anthony pulled him into a fierce embrace the minute the door was shut. “Thank the Lord you’re back in one piece!”

Sebastian sank into a chair, the ride catching up with him, and a wave of tiredness hitting him hard. “No worse for wear. And thanks to your friend Samuel, we both managed to get a good night’s sleep. That would not have been the case if we’d stayed at The Boar’s Head.”

“I’m glad my message got to him. I didn’t want to think you’d spend too long in that inn. It has a reputation. One Samuel is very proud of, I might add.”

“He is a… singular fellow.”

“Samuel Jenster is a villain and a thief, but there are few men I’d rather have on my side during a fight.”

“It sounds like there’s a story in there,” said Sebastian.

“Didn’t he tell you how we met?
